Fall Pet Safety Tips: How to Keep Your Pet Safe this Autumn
As the leaves start to change and the air becomes crisp, fall brings a whole new set of challenges and potential dangers for our furry companions. Here at ABC Animal Hospital, we want to ensure your pet stays safe and happy all season. Here are a few essential tips to keep in mind:
1. Watch Out for Toxic Plants
Fall might be beautiful, but it’s also the season for mushrooms and other toxic plants like chrysanthemums. These can cause severe gastrointestinal upset or worse if your pet decides to nibble on them during a walk. Keep an eye on your pet outdoors and avoid areas with unknown plants.
2. Prepare for Cooler Weather
As temperatures drop, especially in the mornings and evenings, pets might need extra warmth. Short-haired or senior pets, in particular, could benefit from a cozy jacket for walks. Be mindful of keeping pets warm indoors, too, especially if they tend to sleep on cold floors.
3. Fall Allergies Affect Pets, Too
Just like humans, pets can suffer seasonal allergies. If you notice your pet itching more than usual or experiencing runny eyes, consider having them checked for allergies. We can recommend treatments like antihistamines or special shampoos to soothe their discomfort.
4. Be Cautious Around Fall Décor
As you start decorating for fall and Halloween, remember that many decorations can be hazardous. Keep candles, small ornaments, and electrical cords out of reach. Even fake spider webs can pose a threat to curious pets.
5. Halloween Hazards
Speaking of Halloween, remember to keep all chocolate, candy and treats out of reach. Chocolate, xylitol (found in sugar-free treats), and raisins are all extremely toxic to pets. If you’re dressing your pet in a costume, ensure it fits well and doesn’t restrict movement, breathing, or vision.
With these tips, you can help your pet have a fun and safe fall season! If you have concerns about your pet’s health this fall, please get in touch with us at ABC Animal Hospital.
